Maintaining stable parameters is essential for the proper functioning of a reef aquarium. Calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity directly influence the stability of pH, the ionic strength of the water, and many biological processes such as calcification, ionic exchanges, and coral photosynthesis.

Role in Coral Growth

Appropriate levels of fundamental elements promote more effective passive diffusion of ions through coral tissues. This reduces the energy needed for calcification and allows for faster and stronger formation of the coral skeleton.

In mature reef systems, concentrations can be adjusted to favor coral coloration or to limit excessive growth according to the tank's objectives.

Skeletogenesis

Skeletogenesis relies on the association of calcium and carbonate ions to form aragonite, the main component of the coral skeleton. Magnesium and other secondary elements help stabilize the mineral structure and limit the formation of more fragile calcite.
