Clypeaster oshimensis, commonly known as the sand dollar, is a marine invertebrate with a flattened, disc-shaped body, resembling an ancient coin. Native to the sandy areas of the Pacific Ocean, it is highly valued by aquarists for its efficiency in cleaning the bottom of the aquarium.
This burrowing specimen spends most of its time buried under the sand, where it filters the substrate for organic particles and microalgae. Its flat shape and calm behavior allow it to coexist peacefully with other inhabitants of the reef aquarium.
Clypeaster oshimensis is an omnivore with a detritivore tendency. It naturally consumes debris, microalgae, and fine particles present in the sand. It does not require specific feeding but will appreciate supplements made of microfauna or phytoplankton if needed.
With Clypeaster oshimensis, you gain a discreet but remarkably effective ally to maintain a clean substrate, while adding a touch of elegance to your reef aquarium.
