Tripneustes gratilla – Priest's Cap Sea Urchin / Mitre Sea Urchin

Tripneustes gratilla, commonly known as the priest's cap sea urchin or mitre sea urchin, is a marine invertebrate renowned for its great efficiency in controlling invasive algae in reef aquariums. Native to the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the tropical areas of the Indo-Pacific, it naturally thrives in algae-rich reef flats.

An Algae-Eating Urchin with Varied Colors

The coloration of Tripneustes gratilla can vary significantly depending on the environment, with shades ranging from black to white, including purple or brownish hues. Therefore, its color should not be relied upon for identification, but rather its rounded shape and short yet dense spines. Thanks to its mouth located beneath its body, this sea urchin actively grazes on algae on the substrate, live rocks, and aquarium glass.

Maintenance Conditions

  • Minimum recommended volume: 300 liters
  • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.4
  • Decor: sand, live rocks, natural algae
  • Water flow: moderate to strong

Compatibility and Precautions

This specimen is completely harmless to corals, fish, and other invertebrates. It is perfectly compatible with a reef aquarium. However, an important precaution should be taken when handling it: Tripneustes gratilla secretes a venom through its spines. It does not pose a threat to the aquarium but can cause skin reactions. Therefore, it is essential never to handle it with bare hands.

Feeding

Tripneustes gratilla is a voracious algae grazer. It consumes:

  • Filamentous algae
  • Brown and green algae
  • Plant debris
  • Nori-based supplements if natural algae are insufficient

Why Choose Tripneustes gratilla?

  • Excellent algae eater for reef aquariums
  • Compatible with fish, invertebrates, and corals
  • Active day and night
  • Contributes to maintaining the biological balance of your aquarium

Tripneustes gratilla is a valuable ally for any reef aquarist wishing to naturally limit algae proliferation. Its robustness, peaceful behavior, and efficiency make it a preferred choice for tanks of 300 liters or more.
