Tripneustes gratilla, commonly known as the priest's cap sea urchin or mitre sea urchin, is a marine invertebrate renowned for its great efficiency in controlling invasive algae in reef aquariums. Native to the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the tropical areas of the Indo-Pacific, it naturally thrives in algae-rich reef flats.
An Algae-Eating Urchin with Varied Colors
The coloration of Tripneustes gratilla can vary significantly depending on the environment, with shades ranging from black to white, including purple or brownish hues. Therefore, its color should not be relied upon for identification, but rather its rounded shape and short yet dense spines. Thanks to its mouth located beneath its body, this sea urchin actively grazes on algae on the substrate, live rocks, and aquarium glass.

Tripneuste gratilla
oursin bonnet de belle taille, vraiment plus beau qu'en photo et pleine forme. Ils sont très mobile et parcourent tous l'aquarium. Des tondeuses infatigable en toute grâce. ils essayent de me prendre les escargots pour en faire des chapeaux, ils aiment avoir un truc à se mettre sur la tête. je passe des heures à les contempler.
