Lysmata amboinensis, also known as the barber shrimp or Amboin shrimp, is one of the most popular cleaner shrimps in marine aquariums. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, it is recognizable by its bright red coloration marked with a white dorsal stripe and its long, elegant white antennae.
The Lysmata amboinensis stands out for its unique behavior: it cleans fish of their parasites and skin debris. This service is voluntarily provided by the shrimp, which sometimes sets up actual cleaning stations on live rocks. This behavior is even more noticeable when kept in groups of at least 5 individuals, which promotes its activity and well-being.
A peaceful species, it coexists perfectly with the vast majority of fish, corals, and invertebrates. Mostly active at night or during feeding time, it does not hesitate to seek out food in the water column or to climb on your fish to rid them of their parasites.
The Lysmata amboinensis is omnivorous and not demanding. It readily accepts a varied diet:
It is possible that some specimens may display small parasitic crustaceans on their sides upon receipt. These parasites are harmless to the aquarium and will be naturally eliminated by the shrimp over the course of molts.
Lysmata amboinensis is much more than just a decorative shrimp. It plays an essential role in maintaining the balance of the reef aquarium by ensuring the well-being of the fish and naturally cleaning the tank.
