Lysmata wurdemanni – The Aiptasia-Eating Shrimp

The Lysmata wurdemanni, also known as the aiptasia-eating shrimp, is a well-known species in marine aquariums for its ability to naturally eliminate aiptasias, those invasive anemones. It is closely related to Lysmata rathbunae and shares a similar color pattern, which is why they are sometimes grouped under the designation Lysmata rathbunae/wurdemanni.

A Natural Ally Against Aiptasias

For optimal results in combating aiptasias, it is recommended to introduce a group of 4 to 5 shrimp per 300 liters. In a group, they cooperate to effectively attack the invasive anemones.

Note: overfeeding the aquarium can discourage Lysmata wurdemanni from consuming aiptasias. It is better to avoid food clouds like brine shrimp. Use a feeding station and turn off the flow during the distribution.

Things to Know About Adult Specimens

Some adult shrimp may show small visible parasitic crustaceans on their sides. These parasites pose no danger to the aquarium and are naturally eliminated by the shrimp over their molting cycles, without affecting their health or efficiency.

Behavior and Maintenance

  • Peaceful species, ideal for reef aquariums
  • Mostly active at night or in dimly lit areas
  • Compatible with most fish and invertebrates

The Lysmata wurdemanni is indispensable for aquarists concerned with maintaining a clean, balanced, and aiptasia-free tank. In addition to its effectiveness, it is aesthetic, discreet, and easy to acclimate.
