Lobophytum sp. – Finger Leather Coral
A robust, flexible, and decorative soft coral
The Lobophytum sp., also known as finger leather coral or Lobophyton, is a soft coral closely related to Sarcophyton. It forms large, thick, branched lobes reminiscent of fingers, hence its common name. Very resilient and adaptable, it is an excellent choice for beginner reef aquarists.
An easy coral to propagate
Thanks to its firm yet flexible structure, Lobophytum is very easy to propagate. It attaches easily to a rock or substrate and quickly develops new growths. Its rapid growth makes it an ideal species for creating volume and filling the reef decor.
Flexible lighting and flow conditions
This coral does not require strong lighting. A standard LED or T5 lighting setup suits it perfectly. It prefers moderate water flow, which helps aerate the tissues, stimulate polyp opening, and remove waste without causing harm.
Water parameters
The Lobophytum sp. is not demanding and tolerates a variety of conditions. It thrives in stable, well-oxygenated water:
- Temperature: 24–26 °C
- Salinity: 35 ppt (1.025)
- pH: 8.0–8.4
- KH: 7–9 dKH
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
