The Sarcophyton lobatum is a soft leather-type coral, known for its ease of maintenance and great robustness. It forms a more or less pleated cap, covered with thin and mobile polyps that give it a lively and textured appearance. It’s an ideal species for starting a reef aquarium.
The Sarcophyton lobatum reproduces very easily in an aquarium. To create a new colony, simply neatly cut a piece of the cap with a new scalpel, then gently attach it to a rock using a flexible rubber band. It's important to not tighten the rubber band too much to avoid injuring the tissues.
Do not attempt cutting if the coral is in a molting period: the polyps are retracted and skin fragments may detach. Wait until the coral has returned to a normal extension before any manipulation.
The Sarcophyton lobatum has no particular maintenance requirements. It tolerates standard water parameters, moderate lighting (LED or T5), and gentle to moderate water flow, sufficient to help it remove waste or molting residues.
Like all leather corals, it appreciates stable water:
Easy, sturdy, and ideal for learning the basics of cutting, the Sarcophyton lobatum is a very popular coral in reef aquariums. It grows slowly but steadily and can quickly become a living and undulating centerpiece in your tank.
