Pictichromis diadema: the diadem dottyback, a burst of color for marine aquariums
The Pictichromis diadema, also known as the diadem dottyback, is a small territorial and colorful reef fish native to the reefs of Indonesia and the coasts of East Asia. Appreciated for its striking brilliance, it is a dynamic choice for experienced aquarists.
The Pictichromis diadema features a mostly yellow elongated body, topped with a purple stripe running from the head to the dorsal fin. This small fish reaches 5 to 6 cm in adulthood and has delicate translucent fins.
A bold and territorial behavior
The diadem dottyback is known for its bold character and marked territoriality, especially in small-volume aquariums. It is important not to associate it with fish of similar colors to avoid aggressive behaviors.
Cohabitation with small animals is not recommended as the Pictichromis diadema might consider them as prey. A pair can be maintained only if it is well-formed from the beginning.
An aquarium with numerous hiding places starting at 110 liters
To ensure proper maintenance of the Pictichromis diadema, it is necessary to provide it with an aquarium of at least 110 liters incorporating:
- Many live rocks to form natural hiding places and territories,
- A free swimming area in open water,
- Moderate water flow to ensure good oxygenation of the water.
An adapted carnivorous diet
The Pictichromis diadema follows a carnivorous diet. In captivity, it readily accepts:
- Live or thawed Artemia,
- Mysis, finely chopped krill,
- Small pellets for marine carnivores.
A varied and balanced diet allows it to maintain its vitality and preserve the intensity of its colors.
A small vibrant fish for knowledgeable aquarists
The diadem dottyback Pictichromis diadema is a captivating and lively fish that will brighten up marine aquariums with its yellow and purple brilliance. Its bold character, however, requires good knowledge of interspecific compatibility.
