Ophiolepis superba – Superb detritivorous brittle star for reef aquarium
Ophiolepis superba, nicknamed the superb brittle star, is a slender and quick starfish known for its efficiency in eliminating organic waste in reef aquariums. With its flexible and highly mobile arms, it sneaks into every nook and cranny of the decor to devour debris and food remnants, thus contributing to a clean and healthy aquarium.
An unobtrusive and essential brittle star
Highly appreciated by aquarists, Ophiolepis superba is completely harmless to corals, fish, and invertebrates. It mostly lives under rocks during the day and becomes active at night. Perfectly adapted to reef environments, it easily integrates into any well-decorated aquarium.
Maintenance conditions
- Minimum recommended volume: 150 liters
- Temperature: 23°C to 27°C
- pH: 8.0 to 8.4
- Decor: sandy substrate, live rocks, shaded areas
- Nocturnal activity: primarily comes out once the light is off
Behavior and compatibility
It is perfectly compatible with community reef aquariums. No aggression is to be feared, even with the most delicate species. Very autonomous, it plays an important ecological role in the aquarium by reducing waste before it pollutes the water.
Note: it is common for brittle stars to arrive with a slightly atrophied arm. This is due to their lifestyle or collection. Regeneration is quick and natural, usually within 1 to 2 months.
Diet
Ophiolepis superba feeds on:
- Organic debris present in the sand
- Fish food leftovers
- Small dead prey, microorganisms
An occasional supplement with brine shrimp or pieces of crustaceans is possible, but not necessary.
