Ophiocoma nereidina is a robust and ornamental brittle star, known for its efficiency in cleaning reef aquariums. Its star-shaped body and long, mobile arms allow it to easily sneak under rocks in search of debris and food remnants. It is particularly active at night but remains visible during the day if the decor is spacious enough.
This brittle star primarily lives hidden under live rocks and moves with agility to ensure the cleaning of the aquarium floor. Very effective, it consumes a wide range of decomposing organic matter, thus preventing waste accumulation in hard-to-reach areas. Ophiocoma nereidina is harmless to fish, corals, and other invertebrates.
Of a peaceful nature, this brittle star poses no cohabitation problems with other reef species. It is ideal in a community reef aquarium, even populated with sensitive animals. Note that brittle stars may sometimes arrive with shortened arms due to fishing or maintenance; this has no consequence, as their arms naturally regenerate in a few days.
Ophiocoma nereidina naturally feeds on organic waste and food remnants at the bottom of the aquarium:
It can also occasionally consume meaty foods like pieces of shrimp or artemia, distributed near its hiding spot.
Ophiocoma nereidina is an excellent ally for maintaining the cleanliness of your reef tank. Discreet but active, it ensures effective cleaning without disturbing the other tank inhabitants.
