Acanthurus bariene: A Rare Surgeonfish with Unique Presence

The Acanthurus bariene is an uncommon surgeonfish, appreciated by experienced aquarists for its elegantly striped dark livery and imposing appearance. This fish is distinguished by a massive body in chocolate brown to blackish hues, adorned with fine parallel light lines and a bluish sheen on the fins. This sober yet sophisticated appearance makes it a centerpiece in a large marine aquarium.

Native to the Indian Ocean, particularly deep reef areas, the Acanthurus bariene is a fish that needs space to express itself. It reaches a significant size in adulthood, with a robust silhouette that requires an aquarium of at least 800 liters. Therefore, it is reserved for serious and well-equipped setups.

Assertive Temperament and Space Requirement

This surgeonfish has a territorial and sometimes dominant temperament, especially towards other similarly shaped fish or other Acanthurus. It is recommended not to house it with other surgeonfish unless in a very large tank (> 1000 liters) or in well-compartmentalized systems. However, it can coexist with calm, non-competing, and well-selected species.

Its great swimming ability and muscular power make it a dynamic fish. It needs a moderate to strong current and a well-oxygenated environment to thrive. Open areas for swimming, as well as hiding places for resting, are essential for its balance.

Suitable Diet for a Robust Fish

The Acanthurus bariene is primarily herbivorous but can be opportunistic. It is essential to provide a solid vegetable base in its daily diet. Nori algae, spirulina, rinsed lettuce leaves, as well as quality vegetable pellets, are recommended.

A supplementary diet consisting of plankton, enriched brine shrimp, or mysis can be offered occasionally, but should not become dominant. A good dietary balance helps enhance its coloration and natural resistance.

A Choice Reserved for Experienced Aquarists

Due to its adult size, territorial behavior, and specific needs, the Acanthurus bariene is reserved for experienced aquarists with the infrastructure and expertise necessary for its proper acclimatization. Regular observation and precise monitoring of its behavior are recommended, especially during its introduction.

For enthusiasts seeking a rare, powerful, and visually impactful surgeonfish, the Acanthurus bariene offers unparalleled presence and a majestic presence in exceptional marine aquariums.
