The Acanthurus nigrofuscus, often called the brown surgeonfish, is a modest, efficient species highly valued for its role as a natural algae regulator in marine aquariums. Native to the coral reefs of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, it is widespread in shallow areas where it actively grazes on algae throughout the day.
This fish exhibits the classic morphology of the Acanthuridae family: an oval and flattened body, fluid and fast swimming, and an erectile caudal spine used for defense or establishing territory. Its uniform brown coloration with occasional subtle purple or bluish tints gives it a discreet appearance that contrasts with its great utility in the tank.
The Acanthurus nigrofuscus is known for its calm temperament. It is an active but rarely aggressive fish that integrates very well into community aquariums, including with other non-territorial surgeonfish or those of equivalent size.
It spends most of its time grazing on microalgae on live rocks, the decor, or the walls, making it a valuable ally for the biological balance of a reef aquarium. It almost never hides and remains always visible, allowing for pleasant daily observation.
This fish is robust after acclimation and suitable for aquarists of all levels, provided its basic needs are met. It is recommended to keep it in an aquarium of at least 400 to 500 liters, well-oxygenated, with moderate water circulation and surfaces for grazing.
The ideal environment includes areas for free swimming and a well-developed rocky decor. It is advisable to avoid cohabitation with other Acanthurus of similar shape or behavior in medium-sized tanks.
The Acanthurus nigrofuscus is a strict herbivore and its diet should be predominantly plant-based. It eagerly consumes nori algae, vegetable pellets, spirulina, as well as the natural microalgae present in the tank.
Occasionally, it can be offered supplements of brine shrimp or mysis, but these should remain secondary. A good plant-based diet ensures its health, longevity, and active behavior.
The Acanthurus nigrofuscus is an excellent maintenance fish for reef aquariums. Discreet, robust, peaceful, and useful, it perfectly complements a balanced population while playing an active role in controlling unwanted algae.
For aquarists looking to combine functionality and stable behavior, the brown surgeonfish is a species to prioritize in any appropriately sized marine aquarium.
