The Acanthurus dussumieri, known as the crowned surgeonfish, is a marine species that is as useful as it is aesthetic. Native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, this large fish is distinguished by its slender body with an iridescent blue-gray coat, adorned with a lighter area at the top of the head, from which it gets the name "crowned".
Highly appreciated in marine aquariums, this fish combines a majestic presence with an essential ecological function in the tank. Thanks to its natural grazing behavior, it actively helps maintain a healthy and visually clean environment.
The Acanthurus dussumieri is particularly effective in eliminating diatoms, those brown algae that can quickly cover rocks and sand in a reef aquarium. It also feeds on detritus and microalgae, thus playing a role as a natural cleaner in the tank's ecosystem.
Its behavior involves grazing surfaces and sand in search of organic particles, thus limiting their accumulation and actively contributing to the overall balance of the marine system.
This fish is active but peaceful by nature and integrates well in a community aquarium as long as it is provided with enough space. Due to its imposing adult size, it is recommended to keep it in an aquarium of at least 700 to 800 liters, with open areas for swimming and a sandy substrate.
It can coexist with other surgeonfish, provided that the species are non-competitive and that the aquarium is properly structured with well-defined territories.
The Acanthurus dussumieri is an opportunistic herbivore. It needs a diet rich in plants, including nori algae, spirulina, vegetable flakes, or pellets. It also accepts frozen foods (mysis, artemia) as a supplement, but the base should remain plant-based to preserve its health and effectiveness in the tank.
An appropriate diet helps strengthen its immune system, prevent deficiencies, and maintain its natural coloration, particularly the bluish reflections on its sides and fins.
The crowned surgeonfish is both beautiful, robust, and functional. Its presence in a reef aquarium helps limit the proliferation of diatoms, while adding a touch of elegance with its slender silhouette and changing colors under lighting.
For aquarists looking to combine practicality and aesthetics, the Acanthurus dussumieri is an essential species, ideal for large marine tanks in search of an active, decorative, and useful fish.
