Common name: Spotted Unicornfish in the Maldives. This fish has an elongated brown body with a wide white stripe; a horn develops very early on its head. Naso brevirostris: the short-nosed unicorn surgeonfish, elegant and peaceful

The Naso brevirostris, also known as the short-nosed unicorn surgeonfish, is a large marine fish belonging to the Acanthuridae family. It is highly appreciated by aquarists for its peaceful behavior, natural elegance, and active contribution to grazing algae in large reef aquariums.

It is characterized by a fusiform gray-blue body, tapered fins, and a slightly pronounced frontal hump that gives the species its name "brevirostris". Its slender and elongated silhouette allows it to move gracefully in areas with moderate to strong currents. This fish can reach up to 45 cm in adulthood, thus requiring a very large tank.

A peaceful and sociable behavior

The Naso brevirostris is known for its docility. It coexists easily with other marine species, including other surgeonfish, provided each has its own territory. Not very territorial and not aggressive, it is often chosen as a peaceful large surgeonfish for large-capacity community reef tanks.

Its continuous swimming in the open areas of the tank offers constant movement and great elegance. It is important to provide it with wide swimming corridors, with rocky areas where it can occasionally graze.

A spacious environment is essential

Maintaining the Naso brevirostris requires a marine aquarium of over 1000 liters, ideally over 1500 liters for an adult. It needs a large swimming area, good water flow, and optimal oxygenation to remain active and healthy.

The setup should include live rocks with microalgae, shaded areas, and a sandy zone. This surgeonfish is not a burrower but enjoys open and well-aerated tanks.

A strict herbivorous diet

The short-nosed unicorn surgeonfish is a strict herbivore. It naturally consumes microalgae, organic films, and benthic algae present in the aquarium. Its diet in captivity should include:

  • Fresh or dried nori algae, offered several times a day.
  • Vegetable pellets rich in spirulina and fibers.
  • Occasional supplements like krill or brine shrimp, in small quantities.

This diet supports its digestion, active behavior, and contributes to the quality of its coloration.

A majestic fish for experienced aquarists

The Naso brevirostris is a prestigious fish for large-volume marine tanks. Thanks to its calm behavior, utility in algae control, and natural majesty, it fits perfectly in well-structured reef aquariums.

For experienced aquarists seeking a peaceful, aesthetic, and useful surgeonfish, the Naso brevirostris is an essential species as long as one has sufficient space and an appropriate diet.
