Zebrasoma xanthurum, also known as the yellowtail surgeonfish, is a majestic fish with a purple, deep blue-tinted body contrasted by a bright yellow tail and matching pectoral fins. Originating from the Indian Ocean and the Middle Eastern seas, this grazing fish spends its days roaming the rocks in search of algae, either alone or in small groups.
With a powerful oval-shaped body and lively swimming, the Zebrasoma xanthurum requires a spacious aquarium of at least 600 liters. It appreciates open swimming areas as well as rock structures that offer hiding places. It can coexist with other surgeonfish in a large volume, provided it has a well-defined territory.
This fish is an omnivore with a herbivorous tendency. It constantly grazes on algae, detritus, microfauna, and organic matter deposited on live rocks and substrates. It is also capable of adapting to a varied diet in captivity, provided it undergoes a gradual acclimatization phase.
Although raised in captivity, these fish are acclimatized for 1 week in our facilities before shipment. They are initially fed with live marine copepods, then accustomed to frozen artemia and finally to marine pellets. This method ensures optimal adaptation in the aquarium.
Zebrasoma xanthurum is an iconic and useful fish for any large reef aquarium. Its graceful appearance and vibrant colors make it a centerpiece for enthusiasts seeking an active, elegant, and responsibly raised specimen.
