Naso unicornis: the blue-spined unicornfish, a peaceful giant for very spacious aquariums

The Naso unicornis, also known as the blue-spined unicornfish or more familiarly as the unicorn fish, is an iconic surgeonfish known for its massive silhouette and its distinctive bony frontal protrusion shaped like a horn, characteristic of adults. This fish belongs to the Acanthuridae family and can reach up to 60 cm in adult size, making it one of the largest surgeonfish kept in reef aquariums.

Its oval-shaped body displays a coloration ranging from pale blue to dark green, depending on the lighting, age, and health condition of the specimen. The two bluish spines are recognized for their peaceful behavior and robustness, provided they are kept in an environment suited to their size.

A peaceful behavior but requiring vast space

The blue-spined unicornfish is a calm and sociable fish when it has a sufficient swimming volume. It constantly moves in open water and appreciates clear zones in a well-oxygenated tank. In its natural environment, it evolves in loose groups or solitary in algae-rich areas.

In an aquarium, its maintenance requires a volume greater than 1500 liters when fully grown. Smaller specimens (S, M) are juveniles, more tolerant, and easier to acclimate, but it's essential to anticipate their rapid growth from the time of acquisition.

A stable environment rich in vegetation

The Naso unicornis requires a very spacious, well-circulated, and oxygenated aquarium, with long swimming lanes. A setup consisting of live rocks and rocky areas covered with microalgae is ideal to meet its natural needs.

It is preferable not to keep it with species that are too small or territorial. Its body mass and swimming power can intimidate sensitive fish in a too confined environment.

A strict herbivore diet

The Naso unicornis is a strict herbivore that constantly consumes algae attached to the decor. In captivity, it should receive:

  • Fresh or dried nori algae, offered daily.
  • Vegetable pellets enriched with spirulina.
  • Occasional supplements of mysis or krill, especially for juveniles in the growth phase.

An abundant plant-based diet contributes to good digestive health, behavioral stability, and the harmonious development of the frontal protrusion in adults.

A marine giant reserved for expert aquariums

The Naso unicornis is a spectacular and useful fish for very spacious reef aquariums. Thanks to its stable temperament, impressive morphology, and ability to efficiently graze algae, it is highly sought after by experienced aquarists.

For enthusiasts with a large-volume marine aquarium, the blue-spined unicornfish is a remarkable choice, provided it is offered an appropriate diet and generous swimming space from a young age.
