The Acanthurus xanthopterus, also known as the yellowfin surgeonfish or purple surgeonfish, is a large fish belonging to the Acanthuridae family. It is distinguished by an ovoid body with blue to purple hues, adorned with bright yellow fins and a horizontal yellow mask over the eyes, giving it a lively and energetic expression.
This combination of colors, both sober and luminous, gives it an elegant look in large marine aquariums. Like all fish of its kind, the Acanthurus xanthopterus has a retractable caudal spine typical of surgeonfish, which it uses to defend itself or assert dominance over its peers.
An Energetic and Fearless Behavior
The purple surgeonfish is a very active fish that spends most of its time swimming in the open areas of the aquarium. It is lively and not shy, often approaching the glass in search of food. It rarely hides and is constantly in motion, making it an excellent choice to animate a large reef tank.
This behavior as a great swimmer requires a minimum volume of 1500 liters, essential for its well-being. It is not recommended to keep it in smaller tanks, as it may develop stress or aggressive behaviors.
A Varied and Rich Diet
The Acanthurus xanthopterus is an omnivore with herbivorous tendencies that enjoys a varied diet. To ensure its robustness and longevity, it is recommended to provide:
- Marine algae (nori, spirulina) or, failing that, vegetable substitutes such as lettuce, broccoli, or blanched spinach leaves.
- Regular protein intake such as mysis, krill, artemia, and mussel meat.
- High-quality complete pellets and flakes specifically formulated for marine fish.
This varied diet helps strengthen its immune system, maintain its bright colors, and support its vitality in the tank.
