Heniochus varius – Green Bannerfish for Reef Aquarium

Heniochus varius, also known as the green bannerfish, is an unusual and elegant species, easily recognizable by its dark brown to black coloration, enhanced by yellowish hues on the dorsal part. Its triangular shape and elongated dorsal fin give it a noble and fluid appearance in the aquarium.

Native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, this fish is highly valued in reef aquariums for its active behavior and adaptability. It generally lives alone or in pairs and spends much of its time exploring the environment.

Maintenance Conditions

  • Minimum recommended volume: 400 liters
  • Temperature: 24°C to 27°C
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.4
  • Decor: reef with many hiding spots and open swimming areas
  • Water movement: moderate to strong

Behavior and Compatibility

The Heniochus varius is quite peaceful, allowing for good coexistence with most other marine species. However, it is preferable not to keep it with very small invertebrates or in a tank that is too cramped. Its curious and composed personality makes it a great candidate for a structured community reef tank.

Diet

This fish is omnivorous and not very demanding in terms of diet. It is recommended to vary its diet to enhance its color and vitality:

  • Frozen brine shrimp
  • Krill
  • Finely chopped mussel and shrimp meat
  • Enriched marine pellets
  • Dried seaweed as a supplement

Why Choose Heniochus varius?

  • Original coloration blending brown, black, and yellow
  • Iconic bannerfish shape
  • Good adaptability in reef aquariums
  • Easy to feed and acclimate

Heniochus varius is a refined choice for any aquarist looking for a fish with a distinctive, calm, and easy-to-maintain look. It enhances the reef decor with elegance while being robust and accommodating.
