The Melichthys vidua, also known as the pinktail triggerfish, is a fish remarkable for its elegance and robustness. This marine specimen has a dark brown to black body contrasted by a white base tail with a bright pink tip. Its anal fins are white, further highlighting its sober and refined appearance.
Native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the Melichthys vidua can reach an adult size of 25 to 40 cm. It is known for its active behavior, dynamic swimming, and long lifespan in an aquarium if the maintenance conditions are well observed.
To properly accommodate a Melichthys vidua, it is essential to have an aquarium of at least 600 liters. This volume allows it to swim freely and fully develop its personality.
The water parameters to be respected are as follows:
It is recommended to provide a decor rich in hiding places and ensure that it does not coexist with other triggerfish of the same genus. Intraspecific relationships are often tense in this species. However, it can perfectly integrate into a community aquarium with other fish of similar size and calm or robust temperament.
An opportunistic omnivore, the Melichthys vidua accepts a wide range of foods. It is advisable to offer it a varied diet, such as:
Feeding two to three times a day in moderate quantities is recommended to maintain its vitality and enhance its colors.
Thanks to its tolerance to variations and adaptability, the Melichthys vidua is an excellent choice for experienced aquarists wishing to add a large, active, and aesthetically unique fish to their marine aquarium. However, its adult size and territorial behavior require a large tank and an appropriate population.
Its bright pink tail and constant swimming behavior will add a touch of movement and elegance to your non-reef community marine aquarium.
