Rhinecanthus verrucosus: Blackspotted Picasso Triggerfish

The Rhinecanthus verrucosus, also known as the blackspotted Picasso triggerfish, is a marine species with a white to light gray oval-shaped body adorned with a characteristic black spot on its sides. Its eyes are barred with two orange lines, further accentuating its atypical appearance, reminiscent of modern art, hence its nickname inspired by the famous painter Picasso.

This fish has a strong personality, being territorial and robust. It is not recommended for reef aquariums as it naturally feeds on a large number of invertebrates. It is therefore ideal for a fish-only tank, where it can fully express its natural behavior.

Care Conditions for the Blackspotted Picasso Triggerfish

This fish requires an aquarium of at least 600 liters to thrive comfortably. It needs a good swimming space as well as numerous live rock hiding spots to feel secure.

Cohabitation with other fish should be with species of a similar size and compatible temperament. Avoid fish that are too calm or too small, as they might be stressed or viewed as prey.

Feeding the Rhinecanthus verrucosus

This omnivorous triggerfish with carnivorous tendencies feeds on a wide variety of prey in nature:

  • Detritus and mollusks
  • Crustaceans, worms, echinoderms
  • Sponges, small fish, and algae

In an aquarium, it will enjoy rich and varied meaty foods: shrimp, mussels, squid, large krill. It is essential to feed this fish two to three times a day in small quantities. Foods with shells can also help with the natural wear of its continuously growing teeth.

A Fish for Experienced Aquarists

The Rhinecanthus verrucosus is a perfect choice for enthusiasts of charismatic and expressive fish. It requires a well-designed fish-only aquarium, with powerful filtration, ample swimming space, and carefully selected tankmates.
