Balistes punctatus: Spotted Triggerfish

The Balistes punctatus, commonly known as the spotted triggerfish, is a species with a long yellowish-white body adorned with small black spots. It has a highly visible yellow spot that enhances its unique aesthetics. This marine fish is one of the most impressive species to observe in a large aquarium.

A Characterful Fish for a Spacious Aquarium

This spotted triggerfish can reach up to 30 cm in adulthood, so it requires a large-volume aquarium with excellent stability. Its behavior, although relatively calm when young, can become more territorial over time. It is recommended not to introduce it with invertebrates or small sensitive fish.

It is imperative to provide it with an environment featuring a nice swimming space, rocky areas to hide, and a sturdy decor. It likes to settle in cavities that it can defend as its territory.

Maintenance Conditions for the Balistes punctatus

To ensure its well-being, plan for an aquarium of at least 800 liters.

Diet

This spotted triggerfish follows an omnivorous diet with a carnivorous tendency. It readily feeds on:

  • Chopped shrimp and mussels
  • Krill, squid
  • Carnivorous pellets
  • Vitamin-enriched foods

A varied diet distributed several times a day maintains its vitality and prevents aggressive behavior.

A Specimen for Experienced Aquarists

The Balistes punctatus is an impressive and robust fish, reserved for experienced aquarists with a suitable aquarium. It will become the centerpiece of your large tank. However, be cautious of its compatibility: it should be avoided in reef aquariums containing invertebrates.
