Siganus magnifica, also known as the magnificent rabbitfish, is a spectacular reef fish from the Indian Ocean. Visually very atypical, it features a white body decorated with a large black band running across its sides, a reddish dorsal fin, yellow pectoral fins, and a caudal fin finely edged with yellow. A black stripe runs diagonally across its head, giving it an intense and piercing look.
Unlike some Siganus species, the Siganus magnifica is very tolerant of other fish species, even small ones. However, intraspecific relationships can be complex, so it is preferable to avoid introducing multiple individuals unless in a very large tank. Peaceful, curious, and lively, this fish actively participates in the tank's dynamics without causing stress or predation on other species.
Primarily phytophagous, Siganus magnifica feeds on algae present on live rocks and plants. It is highly recommended to provide it with a supplementary diet of nori, blanched spinach, spirulina or enriched plant-based foods. This helps channel its energy and reduce opportunistic behaviors (such as picking at invertebrates out of boredom).
This magnificent fish is robust, adapts well to the standard conditions of a large reef aquarium, and tolerates variations if its diet is rich and regular. It contributes to algae regulation and enlivens the central areas of the tank. Besides its striking appearance, it is harmless to corals if well-fed.
Siganus magnifica is a top choice for aquarists seeking an elegant, useful, and peaceful fish to complement a colorful reef decor.
