The Gomphosus varius, better known as the bird wrasse fish, is an elegant and active marine wrasse native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific. This fish is particularly appreciated for its elongated green-blue body with metallic reflections, highlighted by light yellow hues visible on its dorsal and pectoral fins.
The Gomphosus varius has a very characteristic morphology with a long, tapered snout, perfectly adapted for capturing invertebrates hidden in the crevices of the reefs. This fish can reach up to 30 cm in adult size and naturally evolves in shallow reef areas, where it constantly explores its environment in search of food.
The bird wrasse fish is a great, lively, and curious swimmer. It actively explores its environment and thus requires a clear and extensive swimming space. It is naturally rather solitary, although it can be kept in pairs in very spacious aquariums.
Its coexistence is possible with robust and fast fish. However, the presence of small benthic invertebrates, such as shrimp, crabs, or small mollusks, is strongly discouraged, as it actively hunts them with its specialized jaw.
To keep a Gomphosus varius in good conditions, it is essential to provide an aquarium of at least 400 liters. This volume allows this very active fish to swim freely while having natural hiding places to rest.
The decor should include:
The Gomphosus varius is an opportunistic carnivore that primarily hunts benthic invertebrates. In the aquarium, it readily accepts:
It is recommended to feed the bird wrasse fish two to three times a day in small amounts, to maintain its vitality and natural food exploration rhythm.
The Gomphosus varius is a remarkable and dynamic species. Its bright coloring, elegant swimming behavior, and behavioral intelligence make it a choice addition for spacious and well-decorated marine aquariums.
With a large water volume, open swimming space, and appropriate diet, the bird wrasse fish becomes a fascinating, robust, and very expressive inhabitant, for intermediate to advanced aquarists looking for an active and colorful species.
