Salt for Marine Aquariums
Synthetic salt enabled the rise of modern marine aquaristics from the 1960s, with the introduction of commercial mixes designed to reproduce seawater in a stable and reproducible way. The formulas then evolved to meet the needs of reef aquariums, providing a consistent base of calcium, magnesium, carbonates, and trace elements.
The strengths of a good reef salt include batch-to-batch consistency, rapid dissolution, effective buffering to stabilize pH, and a composition suitable for sensitive corals and invertebrates. Depending on the product range, some salts aim for higher levels of fundamental elements to support growth, while others prioritize a composition close to natural seawater and very pure raw materials.
