Nitrates (NO3)

What to do when the level is too high?

Risks: proliferation of unwanted algae, dull coloration of corals, slowed growth, increased risk of cyanobacteria invasions.

Measures: gradually reduce nitrates through regular partial water changes, improve biological filtration (Bacto Blend, addition of denitrifying bacteria), slightly reduce the amount of food distributed, check the quality and efficiency of skimming (optimal value: between 2 and 5 mg/l NO3).

What to do when the level is too low?

Risks: loss of vibrant coral coloration (especially SPS), weakening of corals, growth stoppage, possible proliferation of dinoflagellates.

Measures: moderately and gradually increase nutrient inputs to achieve an adequate balance (controlled addition of nitrate sources like Fauna Marin Nitrate+), adjust the nitrate-phosphate ratio to ideally aim for a NO3/PO4 ratio close to 100:1, conduct regular monitoring (optimal value: between 2 and 5 mg/l NO3).
