The Holacanthus ciliaris, also called the royal angelfish or Queen Angelfish, is a true icon of marine aquaristics. Native to the Caribbean and the Western Atlantic, it is renowned for its spectacular colors: an electric blue body mixed with bright yellow, with touches of green and orange depending on the lighting. Its dorsal fin features a magnificent bright blue edge. Juveniles have a very different appearance: a dark blue body with light vertical stripes that fade with age.
This large angelfish can reach up to 45 cm at adulthood. Its majestic appearance and assertive behavior make it a unique specimen, reserved for very spacious aquariums and experienced aquarists.
The royal angelfish should be kept alone or in pairs in very large tanks. It does not tolerate the presence of other large angelfish. It can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or fish with a similar morphology.
The Holacanthus ciliaris is omnivorous with a strong tendency to graze on sponges and tunicates in its natural environment. In an aquarium, it is necessary to provide it with a rich and varied diet:
