Dardanus megistos, commonly known as the White-Spotted Hermit Crab, is a marine crustacean recognizable by its bright red shell speckled with white spots and its asymmetrical claws, one of which is significantly larger. This specimen impresses both with its color and its size, which can exceed 10 cm once adult.
Native to the tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Red Sea, Dardanus megistos is an active crustacean with a predominantly carnivorous behavior. Although it sometimes consumes some debris or algae, it is primarily an opportunistic predator, fond of small invertebrates, mollusks, and dead organisms. Its diet makes it more suited to aquariums populated with robust fish and other species not sensitive to predation.
It is imperative to provide several empty shells of various sizes in the aquarium to allow the Hermit Crab to change housing as it grows. Without this, it might attempt to seize shells already occupied by other gastropods in the tank.
Dardanus megistos should be reserved for experienced aquarists with a reef aquarium populated with large fish or well-anchored corals. It is not compatible with small snails or fragile or slow invertebrates. Although very active, it also spends long periods hidden under rocks or in the sand, searching for food or resting during the day.
Dardanus megistos is an extraordinary Hermit Crab that will appeal to enthusiasts of characterful crustaceans. Both imposing, useful, and atypical, it brings a wild touch to any well-structured and balanced reef aquarium.
