The Alpheus armatus, also known as the red pistol shrimp, is a unique marine shrimp with spectacular behavior. Native to the reefs of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean, it is renowned for its claw snapping ability to produce a high-pressure shock wave. This impressive defense mechanism helps to scare off predators or fend off rivals.
This decapod crustacean primarily lives in sediments or under rocks. Highly territorial, the Alpheus armatus digs a burrow which it defends vigorously. Its main weapon is an asymmetrical claw, the snapping of which can project a jet of sediments towards its adversary. This quick movement, almost invisible to the naked eye, is the reason for its nickname pistol shrimp.
The Alpheus armatus shrimp is often observed in symbiosis with a burrowing goby (such as Stonogobiops sp.). While the shrimp digs and maintains a burrow, the goby provides constant vigilance against dangers. This spectacular association brings remarkable ethological interest to the reef aquarium.
The Alpheus armatus pistol shrimp is omnivorous and detritivorous. It consumes:
Discreet during the day and active around its burrow, the Alpheus armatus is a fascinating pistol shrimp that adds character to any reef tank. When associated with a goby, it becomes a true miniature scene of marine life to observe daily.
