The Chaetodon speculum, also known as the Ocellated Butterflyfish, is a fascinating butterflyfish from the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Its intense coloration and discreet behavior make it a prized species among experienced aquarists.
The Chaetodon speculum features a bright yellow elliptical body, marked by a large black and brown oval spot on the upper part of its flanks. A thin vertical black band crosses its eyes. Unusually, its body slightly whitens during the night, adapting to its natural environment. It reaches an adult size of about 18 cm.
A Calm and Independent Behavior
The Chaetodon speculum is a discreet and peaceful fish. In most cases, it ignores other inhabitants of the aquarium, promoting harmonious cohabitation with non-aggressive species.

A Delicate Diet

In captivity, its diet must be carefully adapted. It gradually accepts:
- Live or thawed Artemia and mysis,
- Enriched marine pellets designed for specialized omnivorous fish,
- Small pieces of thawed seafood.
