Lissocarcinus orbicularis – Symbiotic Crab of the Sea Cucumber
Lissocarcinus orbicularis, better known as the sea cucumber crab, is a small crustacean living in perfect symbiosis with holothurians. This discreet crab finds refuge in the cavities of the sea cucumber, feeding on food particles present near its host without ever harming it.
A Fascinating and Natural Behavior
The sea cucumber crab is a symbiotic animal: it cannot live long without its host, most often a holothurian. This unique bond makes it an original inhabitant of your reef aquarium, harmless and very interesting to observe for animal behavior enthusiasts.
Maintenance Conditions
- Recommended volume: 150 liters minimum
- Temperature: 23°C to 27°C
- pH: 8.0 to 8.4
- Essential host: live sea cucumber (holothurian)
- Compatibility: very good with peaceful invertebrates and fish
This crab lives exclusively in association with its host. Without a holothurian, it will not survive. We therefore recommend introducing it into a reef aquarium already equipped with an appropriate sea cucumber.
Diet
Lissocarcinus orbicularis feeds on the organic debris and microparticles that the current deposits around its host. No specific feeding is required if the aquarium is well-balanced.
