Neoglyphidodon oxyodon: the Indonesian damsel with an electric dress
The Neoglyphidodon oxyodon, also known as the Indonesian damsel or electric blue damsel, is a robust and spectacular reef fish highly valued for its intense coloration at the juvenile stage. Young individuals display a bright electric blue dress, sometimes marked with a black or pale yellow band. As they grow, the coloration may darken, evolving into a midnight blue or duller brown, while their temperament becomes more pronounced.
The Neoglyphidodon oxyodon can reach up to 12 cm in adulthood, making it a large damsel requiring an aquarium of at least 200 liters. It is a territorial fish that fiercely defends its living area, yet captivates with its presence and resilience.
A territorial and assertive behavior
The oxyodon damsel is known for its strong character, especially in adulthood. It can be aggressive towards smaller or more timid fish, particularly if the aquarium is too small or the décor too sparse. It is therefore recommended to:
- Keep it alone or as a pair in tanks smaller than 300 liters,
- Or integrate it into a well-structured community tank with robust and fast fish.
A clear hierarchy is more easily established if cohabitation is anticipated and individuals are introduced simultaneously. Its behavior is more tolerable in well-designed larger tanks.
An essential rocky environment
The Neoglyphidodon oxyodon requires an aquarium rich in live rocks, offering multiple retreat and territory areas. Each fish should be able to establish its own space without interfering with its neighbors. Moderate to strong water flow and good oxygenation help channel its energy.
For successful cohabitation, the tank should include shaded areas, cavities, and open spaces for swimming. This significantly reduces aggressive behaviors.
A balanced omnivorous diet
Like most damsels, the Neoglyphidodon oxyodon is omnivorous. It readily accepts:
- Complete marine flakes and pellets for omnivorous fish,
- Regular supplements of brine shrimp, mysis, krill, frozen or freeze-dried,
- Vegetable supplements based on spirulina or nori to enhance its color and digestion.
A varied diet helps to preserve the intensity of juvenile colors and limit tensions related to food competition. The frequency of meals is important to maintain its natural dynamism.
