Chromis viridis, more commonly known as the blue-green chromis, is a peaceful and very popular reef fish in marine aquariums. Native to the warm waters of South Asia and Oceania, it naturally schools within coral reefs.
It is distinguished by a shimmering blue-green oval body, with shifting hues depending on the lighting. Males are generally slightly larger than females, reaching a size of 5 to 8 cm.
The Chromis viridis is a calm, minimally territorial fish, which becomes particularly interesting when kept in a structured school. It swims in open water, near branching corals, where it takes refuge in case of stress. A single individual can be kept, but to replicate its natural behavior, it is advised to form a group of 20 to 50 individuals in a very spacious aquarium (minimum 5000 L).
In smaller groups (5 to 10 individuals), dominance behaviors may appear. A well-structured setup with numerous hiding spots and retreat areas is recommended to limit tensions.
A not very demanding omnivore, it quickly accepts dry and frozen food. A varied diet contributes to its longevity and the intensity of its coloration.
Chromis viridis is an iconic fish of tropical reefs. Easy to acclimate, sociable, and visually captivating, it stands out as an essential choice for any marine schooling fish enthusiast.
