Chromis retrofasciata, also known as the black-bar chromis, is a small reef-dwelling damselfish native to the western Pacific Ocean. It features an oval yellow-cream body, sometimes ochre, with a distinct horizontal black band at the rear of the body, separating the white caudal fin from the rest of the body.
This fish naturally lives solitarily or in small groups in coral-rich lagoons and reef slopes. In an aquarium, it's best to keep at least 5 individuals to establish a hierarchy and limit aggression. The setup should offer numerous hiding spots and escape areas to maintain a peaceful environment.
With age, Chromis retrofasciata can become territorial. It is therefore recommended to regularly monitor its behavior, especially if the group is small or if the tank lacks rock structure. Cohabitation with larger fish is generally well tolerated.
Not demanding, this fish easily feeds on dry or frozen foods suitable for reef fish.
Chromis retrofasciata is an elegant and lively damselfish, ideal for aquarists looking for an original and active species. When kept in a school in a well-arranged aquarium, it will reveal its full behavioral and aesthetic potential.
