The Pomacentrus moluccensis, also known as the lemon damsel or Moluccan damsel, is a highly valued small reef fish for its bright and uniform yellow coloration, which instantly adds a touch of light to any aquarium. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species naturally inhabits shallow coral reefs and adapts very well to life in captivity.
The Pomacentrus moluccensis typically reaches 6 to 7 cm in adulthood. Its compact and oval shape is typical of the Pomacentridae family. It actively swims in the middle to upper areas of the tank, where its dynamic behavior and vibrant color make it very attractive.
The lemon damsel is territorial in adulthood, but its aggressiveness remains moderate if kept in good conditions. It can be kept alone, in pairs, or in small groups, provided that an appropriate volume and well-partitioned decor are maintained.
To avoid intraspecific conflicts, it is advisable to form a group of at least 5 individuals in an aquarium of at least 200 liters. In a 150-liter tank, it is preferable to keep a single individual or a pair, with tank mates of equivalent temperament.
The Pomacentrus moluccensis thrives in a rocky environment rich in hiding places, with areas for free swimming and retreat. Well-arranged live rocks allow each individual to establish its own territory. Moderate to strong water flow promotes its activity.
Good water oxygenation, suitable lighting, and stable parameters ensure the health and vibrant coloration of the Moluccan damsel.
The Pomacentrus moluccensis is omnivorous and easily accepts a varied diet:
Feeding two or three times a day helps to limit food competition and enhance cohabitation among individuals.
Thanks to its natural resilience, lively behavior, and ease of feeding, the Pomacentrus moluccensis is an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. Its bright lemon color makes it perfect for enlivening a decorated reef aquarium.
For successful maintenance, it only requires structured decor, appropriate volume, and well-thought-out cohabitation. The lemon damsel thus stands out as a robust, decorative, and accessible fish in any community reef tank.
