Anisotremus virginicus – Porkfish of the Virgin Islands

Anisotremus virginicus, better known as the Porkfish of the Virgin Islands, is a marine fish native to tropical regions of the Western Atlantic, particularly the Caribbean. It features an elongated yellowish-white body highlighted by two vertical black bands, one of which runs across its eyes, enhancing its stealthy and elegant appearance.

An iconic fish of Caribbean reefs

This fish belongs to the Haemulidae family, also known as grunts. Commonly found in coastal reefs and shallow lagoons, the Anisotremus virginicus is often observed in schools or pairs, peacefully swimming mid-water among rocks and massive corals.

Maintenance conditions

  • Recommended minimum volume: 500 liters
  • Temperature: between 24°C and 28°C
  • pH: between 8.1 and 8.4
  • Decor: live rocks, hiding places, open swimming areas
  • Water flow: moderate to strong

Behavior and compatibility

Relatively peaceful, this fish can live in groups or pairs. It easily cohabits with other calm species but may intimidate smaller fish in small volumes. Ideal for biotope tanks or Caribbean-inspired aquariums.

Feeding

  • Meaty foods: brine shrimp, mysis, chopped shrimp
  • Protein-rich marine pellets
  • Flakes suitable for omnivorous diets

Anisotremus virginicus is an original and robust fish, appreciated for its unique appearance and observant behavior. It will find its place in a regional reef aquarium or one specific to Caribbean species.
