Doryrhamphus excisus – Harlequin Pipefish Cleaner

Doryrhamphus excisus, also known as the harlequin pipefish, is a marine fish as graceful as it is useful, particularly appreciated for its cleaning behavior. It is distinguished by its bright blue slender body, adorned with a black longitudinal stripe, an orange tail edged with white, and an elongated snout characteristic of pipefish.

Originating from the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, this fish thrives near coral reefs, often in pairs or small groups. It frequently occupies rocky crevices or cavities where it sets up its cleaning stations. Its role is recognized in the elimination of parasites on other fish.

Maintenance Conditions

  • Minimum recommended volume: 150 liters for a pair
  • Temperature: between 24°C and 27°C
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.4
  • Decor: live rocks with many hiding places
  • Water flow: moderate to low

Behavior and Compatibility

Calm and discreet, the Doryrhamphus excisus can live alone or in pairs in a community reef aquarium. It coexists well with corals and invertebrates and interacts little with other fish, except to clean them. It is, however, recommended not to keep it with species that are too lively or aggressive, as they could cause stress.

In pairs, this fish displays fascinating behaviors: courtship displays, cleaning of its peers, and sometimes even reproduction if conditions are met.

Feeding

  • Live copepods (recommended for acclimation)
  • Live or frozen brine shrimp and mysis
  • Enriched zooplankton

Being demanding, a mature aquarium rich in microfauna is strongly advised to ensure proper acclimation and long-term survival.

Why Choose Doryrhamphus excisus?

  • Bright colors: blue, black, orange
  • Cleaner role very useful in a reef aquarium
  • Peaceful and captivating behavior
  • Compatible with corals and invertebrates
  • Perfect for mature reef aquariums

Adopting a Doryrhamphus excisus means adding a touch of color and original behavior to your reef aquarium while benefiting from a valuable ally in the fight against parasites.
