Plectorhinchus chaetodontides – Juvenile Dancing Sweetlips for Reef Aquariums

Plectorhinchus chaetodontides is a tropical marine fish that is as fascinating in appearance as it is in behavior. In its juvenile state, it is nicknamed the dancing sweetlips due to its wavy movements and contrasting black and white patterns, resembling a butterfly or a tribal mask in perpetual motion.

Native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, this fish is primarily active during the day. It seeks refuge among live rocks and rocky shelters when stressed, especially when young. As an adult, it undergoes a radical change in appearance, adopting more subdued silver tones, speckled with gray and yellow.

Maintenance Conditions

  • Minimum recommended volume: 700 liters
  • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.4
  • Decor: live rocks, numerous hiding spots, large swimming areas
  • Water flow: moderate to strong

Behavior and Compatibility

The Plectorhinchus chaetodontides is a peaceful fish, well-suited to life in a community reef aquarium. However, it is advisable to avoid overly aggressive or dominant species that could stress it, especially during its juvenile phase. As an adult, it becomes more robust and confident.

It can be kept alone or in a small group in very large tanks. In the presence of conspecifics, a gentle hierarchy may develop without major conflict.

Feeding

This omnivorous fish enjoys:

  • Frozen brine shrimp and mysis
  • Krill, small pieces of mussel and shrimp
  • Enriched marine pellets
  • Flakes suitable for reef fish

Variety in its diet is key to enhancing its coloration and boosting its immune system.

Why Choose Plectorhinchus chaetodontides?

  • Spectacular patterns in juveniles
  • Peaceful and graceful behavior
  • Ideal for large decorative reef tanks
  • Easy to feed after acclimatization
  • An eye-catching fish that sparks curiosity

Plectorhinchus chaetodontides is as mesmerizing as it is pleasant to observe. Its natural grace and colors make it a must-have for large-scale marine aquariums.
