The HI784 is a mini-photometer developed by Hanna Instruments for measuring ammonia in marine water. It is intended for monitoring this parameter in marine aquariums, especially when the bacterial balance is being established or when there is suspicion of imbalance.
High ammonium values indicate disturbed or not yet fully balanced bacterial activity in the filter. Ammonia (NH3) forms from ammonium (NH4) when the pH is above 7 and is the most dangerous form.
Ammonia values of 0.02 mg/L can cause long-term gill damage. Levels above 0.01 mg/L have a negative effect on aquarium organisms. It is essential to measure the pH in addition to the NH4 value.
To determine the amount of NH3 ammonia, multiply the total free ammonia value (NH3/NH4+) displayed by the photometer by the ammonia percentage indicated in the table below, based on pH and temperature.
Example: pH 8.0, temperature 24 °C, NH3/NH4+ 1.00 mg/L
Toxic ammonia concentration: 1.00 mg/L x (5.0 ÷ 100) = 0.05 mg/L
