Synchiropus marmoratus – Rare and Spectacular Starry Mandarin Fish

Synchiropus marmoratus, also known as the starry mandarin fish, is an extremely rare species native exclusively to Maputo Bay, Mozambique. This small fish with intense colors alternates white, red, and black, creating a marbled pattern highly appreciated by reef aquarists.

A Fascinating and Little-Known Fish

Without scales, Synchiropus marmoratus naturally protects itself with a toxic mucus that it excretes when stressed, and a defensive spine located at the front of the gill covers. It lives at the substrate level, slipping between live rocks and coral debris in search of microfauna.

Maintenance Conditions

  • Minimum recommended volume: 100 liters
  • Temperature: 23°C to 28°C
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.5
  • Decor: sandy substrate, numerous hiding places, live rocks
  • Water flow: moderate

A Fish for Mature Reef Aquariums

For the Synchiropus marmoratus to feel comfortable, it is imperative to have a mature aquarium (at least 6 months) rich in natural microfauna. Like other mandarin fish, it sifts the sand to feed on copepods, micro-crustaceans, and other living organisms. It sometimes accepts frozen brine shrimp and nauplii but remains a fish with specific dietary needs.

Behavior and Compatibility

This fish is very peaceful and is perfectly suited for a community reef aquarium. It can live alone, in pairs, or in small groups in very large volumes. It is discreet, spends time resting on the sand, and is mostly active at dawn and dusk. In case of danger, it can quickly burrow into the sand to hide.

Why Choose Synchiropus marmoratus?

  • Very rare and endemic species from Mozambique
  • Marbled fish with spectacular colors
  • Ideal for mature reef aquariums
  • Peaceful behavior, compatible with invertebrates and corals
  • Contributes to the natural control of microfauna

The Synchiropus marmoratus is a unique and rare mandarin fish, perfect for experienced aquarists looking to welcome a living jewel into their reef tank. Its discreet beauty and fascinating behavior make it an original and sought-after choice.
