Rhinomuraena quaesita, better known as the ribbon eel, is a marine species with an exceptional life cycle. Being protandric, it is born male with a black color and a yellow dorsal, then becomes an electric blue adult male, and ends its life as a female, displaying a bright yellow hue.
The juvenile form, particularly sought after in marine aquariums, is distinguished by its intense black snake-like body contrasted by a bright yellow dorsal. Its elegant appearance, enigmatic behavior, and spectacular metamorphosis make this eel a true living jewel for informed enthusiasts.
Important: This eel is very slender and can escape through gaps of less than 1 cm. It is essential to fully secure the tank (covers, grids, overflow protection) to prevent any escape.
Rather solitary and discreet, the juvenile ribbon eel spends its days in rock cavities and emerges mainly at dusk to feed. Although impressive, it is not aggressive towards medium to large fish, but may consume small fish or shrimp.
It can coexist with calm and non-territorial species, but a specific or semi-specific aquarium is often recommended to ensure its well-being.
Carnivorous, the Rhinomuraena quaesita juvenile ideally feeds on:
Targeted feeding with tongs is recommended, especially during the first weeks following introduction.
