Echidna nebulosa – Starry Moray for Marine Aquarium
Echidna nebulosa, known as the starry moray, is an iconic species of the Indo-Pacific reefs. This moray, with a serpentine body speckled with black and yellow on white, can reach up to 1 meter in length when fully grown. Its unique morphology and nocturnal lifestyle make it an impressive addition for experienced aquarists.
This solitary predator spends most of its time hidden in rocks or hollow structures, emerging at nightfall to hunt. The starry moray is a creature with a discreet temperament but requires specific maintenance conditions to thrive.
Maintenance Conditions
- Minimum recommended volume: 1000 liters
- Temperature: between 22°C and 26°C
- pH: 8.2 to 8.4
- Decor: plenty of stones to form hiding places, sandy bottom
- Water movement: moderate
Behavior and Compatibility
The starry moray is a carnivorous species not compatible with crustaceans and very small fish. However, it can coexist with robust species, provided these are introduced before it.
Solitary and calm during the day, it becomes more active at dusk. Although not very aggressive towards other fish, it remains opportunistic and may attempt to capture any small prey that comes within reach.
