Arothron hispidus: White-Spotted Pufferfish

The Arothron hispidus, also known as the white-spotted pufferfish, is an impressive marine species both in its morphology and its defensive behavior. Its brown body dotted with numerous white spots makes it immediately recognizable, as does its unique ability to inflate when stressed, reaching up to twice its original size. This mechanism, although spectacular, is risky for its health, potentially leading to disturbances or even death if repeated.

A unique lifestyle in non-reef aquariums

The Arothron hispidus is a fish incompatible with reef aquariums. It indiscriminately consumes corals, crustaceans, and invertebrates. For its well-being, it should be kept in a fish-only type aquarium, spacious, ideally over 600 liters.

The tank should be decorated with numerous live rocks, not only to create natural hiding places but also to allow the fish to wear down its teeth, which grow continuously. If they overgrow, manual trimming will be necessary.

A varied and structured carnivorous diet

The diet of the Arothron hispidus must be rich and diverse. This fish is a great carnivore, fond of meaty food and invertebrates. Here are the foods to offer it:

  • Raw or thawed shrimp
  • Squid
  • Chopped mussels
  • Large Krill
  • Small marine fish
  • Algae supplement to vary the intake

It is advised to feed this fish twice a day in reasonable amounts to avoid obesity, while maintaining a natural stimulation of its hunting instinct.

A majestic fish, to be handled with care

The Arothron hispidus is a very endearing and intelligent fish, capable of recognizing its caretaker and interacting with its environment. However, it should never be handled by hand out of water, nor should it be made to inflate intentionally. This defensive reflex can cause significant stress and compromise its health.

It is an ideal fish for passionate aquarists seeking an extraordinary animal, provided they accept the constraints related to its dietary and specific behavior.
