Diodon holacanthus: Porcupine Fish

The Diodon holacanthus, also known as the porcupine fish, is a fascinating marine fish due to its appearance and behavior. Its cream-colored body is adorned with brown spots scattered across its back, while its oval silhouette is bristling with rigid spines, which it deploys when stressed or threatened. This feature makes it a spectacular and unique fish to observe.

Behavior and Characteristics

The porcupine fish is known for its ability to inflate with water or air to double or even triple its size and expose its spines, deterring most predators. This impressive defense makes it very popular in aquariums. Calm and generally peaceful, it is nonetheless not recommended to house it with small species or invertebrates, which it might consider as prey.

With a solitary temperament, it appreciates spacious and well-arranged aquariums, where it can move freely. When comfortable in its environment, it develops a certain interactivity with its caretaker, following movements through the glass.

Maintenance Conditions

For successful maintenance, an aquarium with a minimum volume of 800 liters is recommended. The Diodon holacanthus needs a good swimming space as well as numerous hiding places made of live rocks or stable decorations. It tolerates moderate currents and good water oxygenation.

Feeding the Porcupine Fish

The Diodon holacanthus is a strict carnivore. It should receive a varied and rich diet several times a day. Special attention should be paid to the natural wear of its teeth, which grow continuously like all Tetraodontidae.

  • Pieces of shrimp and mussels
  • Squid and small whole fish
  • Thawed large Krill
  • Whole shellfish to promote dental wear

Avoid exclusively soft foods, which may promote excessive tooth growth. It is strongly advised to vary textures and sources of protein.

A Spectacular Fish Reserved for Experienced Aquarists

The porcupine fish Diodon holacanthus is a majestic animal, ideal for large fish-only type aquariums. It attracts attention with its behavior and raised spines while maintaining a docile nature with fish of equivalent size. With proper care, it can live for many years in captivity.
