Canthigaster margaritata: Pearl Pufferfish
The Canthigaster margaritata, often nicknamed the Pearl Canthigaster, is a pufferfish with a brown body adorned with characteristic turquoise blue spots. These patterns form true sun rays around its eyes, giving it a very graphic appearance. Its white belly contrasts nicely with the rest of its body. It is very common in the Red Sea, and can also be found in shallow lagoons and on coral slopes.
Aquarium Maintenance Conditions
The Canthigaster margaritata requires an aquarium with a minimum volume of 400 liters to ensure ample swimming space and plenty of hiding spots. A structured decor, with live rocks and shaded areas, is essential to recreate its natural environment.
The ideal water temperature should be between 24° and 26° and the pH between 8 and 8.5. This species prefers stable tanks with good oxygenation. It is best introduced alone of its species, as it can be aggressive towards other pufferfish or similarly colored fish.
Behavior and Compatibility
This ray-finned fish is curious and intelligent. It continuously explores its environment, sneaking into the nooks of the decor in search of food. However, it is not compatible with invertebrates, mollusks, or corals, which it will not hesitate to nibble on. Therefore, it should be kept exclusively in a fish-only aquarium.
Suitable Diet
To stay in top shape, the Canthigaster margaritata must be fed three to four times a day with small, varied portions. Its diet is omnivorous but tends toward carnivorous. It is crucial to provide it with hard foods to naturally wear down its teeth, such as:
- Whole or chopped shrimp
- Mussels
- Squid
- Large krill
- Supplement of dried or fresh algae
Poor diet or lack of variety can cause dental problems or destructive behavior towards its tankmates.
