Ostracion gibbosus: Humpback Boxfish

The Ostracion gibbosus, better known as the humpback boxfish, is a fish with a light cubic body dotted with dark spots. It is distinctly characterized by the presence of a pyramidal hump on top of its back, hence its name. This rare fish immediately catches the eye in a spacious marine aquarium due to its unusual appearance and calm behavior.

Differences between male and female

A remarkable feature of the male Ostracion gibbosus is its dark lateral stripe that starts at the eye and runs diagonally along its side. This visual distinction allows for easy identification of the sex of the individual, especially in community tanks.

Behavior and compatibility

This boxfish is peaceful and can coexist with calm and non-aggressive species. It is not recommended to introduce it with overly lively or dominant fish. Slow and curious by nature, it explores its environment and rarely shows aggression towards other inhabitants.

Maintenance conditions in the aquarium

To ensure the well-being of the Ostracion gibbosus, an aquarium of at least 400 liters is necessary. It needs sufficient swimming space and a decor rich in hiding spots made up of live rocks. It is essential to add activated carbon to the filtration, as like all boxfish, this specimen can secrete a toxin in case of intense stress or death, endangering other animals in the tank.

Feeding the humpback boxfish

This omnivorous fish needs a varied and rich diet to stay healthy. It should be fed 3 to 4 times a day in small quantities.

  • Raw shrimp
  • Chopped squid
  • Fresh mussels
  • Large krill
  • Algae (such as Nori or spirulina)

A balanced diet helps maintain the intensity of its colors and reduces the risk of disease. Avoid overly dry or nutrient-poor foods.

An original choice for the experienced aquarist

The Ostracion gibbosus captivates with its unusual appearance, calm behavior, and rarity. However, its maintenance requires experience and vigilance, especially regarding stress management and compatibility with other species. It is an ideal marine fish for large aquariums, within a stable and well-maintained environment.
