Ostracion solorensis: Boxfish

The Ostracion solorensis, commonly known as the boxfish, is a unique and charming marine species. It has a white body speckled with black spots, with a geometric appearance typical of Ostraciidae. This fish is particularly active and curious, constantly exploring its environment in search of food.

Behavior and Cohabitation

This boxfish is generally peaceful and can coexist with other calm species in a community aquarium. It appreciates well-structured environments with numerous hiding places where it can rest and feel secure. It does not show aggression but can be stressed by overly active or aggressive species.

Aquarium Maintenance Conditions

To ensure its well-being, it is necessary to provide it with an aquarium of at least 400 liters, with a large swimming space and décor rich in live rocks or other refuges. The Ostracion solorensis is sensitive to stress, and like all boxfish, it can release a dangerous toxin if threatened or upon death. That is why the use of activated carbon in the filtration system is essential to prevent any risk.

Boxfish Diet

The diet of the Ostracion solorensis should be rich and varied. It is recommended to feed it 3 to 4 times a day in small quantities, to maintain its vitality and the beauty of its coat.

  • Finely chopped shrimp
  • Squid
  • Mussels
  • Large Krill
  • Artemia
  • Vegetable supplements like Nori algae or spirulina

A varied diet also helps prevent dental wear and meets the specific needs of this species, which is omnivorous with a carnivorous tendency.

A Fish with Unique Charm

The Ostracion solorensis attracts attention with its unique cubic shape and contrasting black and white patterns. Active and intriguing, it fits perfectly in a large aquarium, provided its specific needs are met. It represents a true visual asset in any well-balanced marine aquarium.
