Echinometra viridis, nicknamed the green burrowing urchin, is an echinoderm native to the shallow waters of the Caribbean. It is distinguished by its green spines which give it its common name and offers a captivating visual display when active, especially at dusk.
Primarily active at night, this urchin spends its time grazing on algae on rocks, substrate, and glass. It effectively contributes to the natural limitation of microalgae in a well-oxygenated and balanced aquarium.
Although very effective against algae, Echinometra viridis is not recommended for reef tanks containing fragile corals. It can damage or displace colonies, especially LPS corals or unfixed frags. Its grazing behavior is vigorous and not very selective.
Echinometra viridis is an impressive and useful urchin for algae control in tanks without sensitive corals. It is perfectly suited for experienced aquarists looking for a natural regulation solution in a minimalist or specific aquarium.
