The Metalia sternalis, also known as the sand dollar, is a small invertebrate native to the Indo-Pacific region. Recognizable by its slightly flattened round body and short, silky-touch spines, it measures about 5 cm when fully grown. It is a robust, active animal and completely harmless to corals, fish, and other invertebrates.
Specialized in burrowing, the Metalia sternalis spends much of its day partially burying itself in the sand in search of food. Its natural behavior makes it an excellent maintenance agent for tanks with sandy substrate, actively contributing to the aeration and cleaning of the substrate.
It consumes both microalgae, organic debris, and various detritus present in the sand, making it a discreet but very effective omnivore. Its activity improves the overall health of the substrate while reducing the proliferation of unwanted algae.
It is advised not to introduce Metalia sternalis into young tanks without microfauna or an established substrate, as it may not find enough food.
With its small size, targeted cleaning capability, and discreet behavior, the Metalia sternalis is a valuable ally for keeping your substrate clean and dynamic. It fits perfectly into balanced reef tanks where it plays a role both useful and aesthetic.
