Acanthurus leucosternon: the Powder Blue Tang, a Brilliant and Demanding Fish
The Acanthurus leucosternon, also known as the Powder Blue Tang, is a marine fish with an oval and laterally compressed body, typical of the Acanthuridae family. This tropical specimen is one of the most colorful and emblematic of reef aquaristics, appreciated for its striking contrasts and elegant swimming.
It is distinguished by a black head, a white chest, an intense royal blue body, and bright yellow fins (dorsal, pectoral, and caudal peduncle). This unique combination of colors makes it an immediately recognizable fish, a true focal point in any large marine aquarium.
An Active and Territorial Behavior
The Acanthurus leucosternon is a very active and strong swimmer. It spends its days exploring its space, grazing surfaces in search of algae, and asserting its place in the group. In nature, it evolves alone or in small groups over shallow coral reefs.
However, this tang is known for its territorial behavior and hostility towards newcomers, especially other tangs. It more easily accepts tank mates that are already established in the aquarium but can become aggressive if its space is threatened.
Recommended Maintenance Conditions
To maintain the Acanthurus leucosternon in good conditions, it is essential to provide a very large aquarium, over 1500 liters. This volume helps limit territorial tensions, ensures smooth swimming, and provides optimal oxygenation for this energetic fish.
A well-structured reef decor with open areas for swimming and rocky zones for territory delineation is strongly advised. An excellent water quality is also necessary, as this species is sensitive to parameter variations.
Omnivorous Diet with a Plant-Based Focus
The Powder Blue Tang follows an omnivorous diet with a herbivorous tendency. Its daily diet should include a majority of marine algae (nori, spirulina) as well as vegetable pellets.
Occasional supplements of krill, artemia, or finely chopped mussels can be offered to vary the protein intake, ensuring that the plant-based diet remains dominant to avoid digestive imbalances.
A Fish for Experienced Aquarists Only
Due to its territorial temperament, sensitivity to stress, and water quality, the Acanthurus leucosternon is a species reserved for experienced aquarists. Its success depends on gentle acclimatization, a spacious and stable environment, and a rigorously adapted diet.
