The Acanthurus nigricauda, known as the Blackfin Surgeonfish, is a marine fish with a calm temperament and an important ecological role in reef aquariums. Native to the shallow reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, it is distinguished by a sleek body ranging from beige to light brown, marked with a black spot on the caudal peduncle, from which it gets its name.
This fish has a typical Acanthuridae morphology: a laterally compressed body, smooth swimming, and an erectile caudal spine used for defense or to establish its position within the group. Less colorful compared to other species of the genus, it is appealing due to its discretion, robustness, and great utility in the aquarium ecosystem.
The Acanthurus nigricauda is an active but not aggressive fish, well-suited to community aquarium life. It can coexist with a wide variety of marine species, provided there is sufficient space and stable maintenance conditions.
It generally swims in open water and spends a good part of its time grazing on algae present on live rocks and decor, thus helping to limit their proliferation. It is an excellent balance fish for well-established reef aquariums.
It is recommended to keep the Acanthurus nigricauda in an aquarium of at least 500 to 600 liters, well-oxygenated, with good water circulation. It will appreciate open areas for swimming as well as rocky walls rich in microalgae for grazing.
This species, being robust after acclimatization, is suitable for intermediate to advanced aquarists who wish to introduce an active and useful fish into their marine tank.
Like most surgeonfish, the Acanthurus nigricauda is primarily herbivorous. It readily feeds on natural marine algae but also requires regular supplements of nori, spirulina, and vegetable pellets.
Occasional supplements of plankton, artemia, or krill can be offered to vary its diet, but not in excess. A predominantly plant-based diet ensures good digestion and promotes stable behavior and optimal health.
The acanthurus nigricauda is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for an effective algae-eating fish that is discreet and non-aggressive. Less colorful but very useful, it actively contributes to the cleanliness of the decor and the biological stability of the aquarium.
Easy to observe, lively yet not stressed, and not very prone to diseases when well-fed, the Blackfin Surgeonfish is an ideal companion for well-designed and large-volume community reef aquariums.
